[ARCHIVED] Request to restrict lake activities for Labor Day Weekend

With the recent rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, Webster Lake’s water level is once again abnormally high for this time of year. We are asking all boaters to be mindful of their wakes in order to minimize property damage around the lake. This includes a request to avoid water sports that create a wake and restrict motoring to headway speed this Labor Day weekend. Headway speed is the slowest speed that a boat can be operated and maintain steerage (usually no greater than 5 mph). Remember that boaters are responsible for their wakes and the potential damage they may cause.

We realize this request could create some hardships on the unofficial last weekend of the Summer, however we request all boaters voluntary cooperation. When high lake levels occurred in July, the vast majority of boaters very courteously complied with the Town’s request. We ask your continued cooperation once again. As the Town does not have the authority to issue a headway speed limit, the Webster Police Department will not be enforcing it.

The lake level is four inches below its July peak and the dam at Stump Pond continues to be open, reducing water levels by at least one inch per day. Increasing the rate of flow through the dam any more would have negative impacts down river through the Millbrook Spillway.

The Webster Police Department will be patrolling the lake this Labor Day weekend.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
