ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
The work of the Webster Conservation Commission in overseeing the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act is crucial. These wetland resource areas serve multiple vital functions, including:
Preventing Storm Damage and Pollution: Wetlands act as natural buffers, absorbing excess water during storms and filtering pollutants before they can enter larger bodies of water.
Flood Control: They help manage floodwaters by absorbing and slowing down runoff, which reduces the risk of flooding in surrounding areas.
Protecting Groundwater Supplies: Wetlands play a key role in replenishing both public and private groundwater sources, ensuring a stable supply of clean water.
Fisheries and Wildlife Habitat: They provide essential habitats for a diverse array of wildlife, supporting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
By carefully reviewing these seven interests outlined in the Act, the Commission ensures that these valuable natural resources are preserved and maintained for future generations.
All residents are reminded that the Webster Conservation Commission must review any projects within the 100 foot buffer zone or 200 foot Riverfront Area. Please reach out to our Conservation Agent with questions and assistance. 508-949-3800 ext. 4008
